Catcher’s mitt break-in guide

Build the pocket with repeated catches and controlled hinge work; avoid heat, soaking and heavy oil.

Quick answer

The safest break-in is repeated catching with the ball the mitt will receive. Work the closure gradually, shape the pocket where the catcher wants the ball to settle and keep the mitt away from ovens, microwaves, hot cars and soaking water.

A controlled process

  • Start with short receiving sessions so the pocket forms from real catches.
  • Work the hinge by opening and closing the mitt along its natural path.
  • Use a glove mallet or the game ball to repeat contact in the intended pocket.
  • Store the mitt dry, with a ball in the pocket and without crushing its shape.
  • Use only a small amount of suitable conditioner when the leather actually feels dry.

What to avoid

High heat and soaking can dry, distort or weaken leather and laces. Heavy oil can add weight and over-soften areas that need structure. Fast is not the same as properly formed.

When is it ready?

The mitt is ready for game use when the catcher can open it to present a target, close it securely around the ball and keep the pocket shape through repeated receiving. Do not use a calendar alone; different mitts and players require different amounts of work.
