Baseball vs softball catcher’s mitts: fit beyond size

Baseball and fastpitch catcher’s mitts can share a listed circumference while having different pockets. Choose for the game ball, closure and the catcher’s hand.

Quick answer

Start with a mitt designed for the catcher's sport. A fastpitch softball is larger than a baseball, so a fastpitch mitt generally has a wider or deeper pocket and a closure shaped to accommodate it. Baseball and softball mitts can have overlapping circumference sizes. Matching the number alone does not make them interchangeable.

Why circumference is not enough

Circumference describes the mitt's outer size, not the dimensions of the pocket or the hand opening. Two equally sized mitts can place the ball differently and close along different paths. Compare with the correct game ball, then check that the catcher can present the target, secure the ball and transfer it without fighting the pocket. For a younger catcher, hand control matters more than choosing an adult-sized target.

Can a baseball mitt work for softball?

Do not assume that a broken-in baseball mitt becomes a fastpitch mitt. Its pocket or closing path may not accommodate the softball comfortably. Choose a sport-appropriate pattern and confirm the ball used by the catcher's league. If a player catches in both sports, compare each ball and seek a model-specific recommendation instead of trying to solve pocket fit with more oil, force or extra break-in.

A practical receiving check

  • Confirm the sport, league ball and player's throwing hand before comparing sizes.
  • Seat the hand fully and check that the wrist stays secure.
  • Place the correct game ball in the intended pocket and check comfortable closure.
  • Once properly broken in, try controlled receiving and normal transfers with a coach.
  • If pocket shape, stiffness or hand fit prevents control, ask for a different fit rather than selecting on circumference alone.

Ordering a custom catcher’s mitt

Choose sport and catcher position before size, throwing hand or appearance. Review only the options shown in the live BLB builder, and ask Bush League to clarify any unlisted pocket or pattern detail before ordering. This guide does not promise a specific padding package or receiving result. Use the catcher sizing and pocket-depth guides to prepare your fit questions.
