Start with age, level and sport, then confirm that the catcher can control and close the mitt comfortably.

Quick answer
Catcher’s mitts are measured around their circumference, not from fingertip to heel. For baseball, a practical starting range is 29.5"–31" for ages 6–9, 31"–32.5" for ages 10–12, 32.5"–34" for high school, and 33"–34.5" for college and adult players. These are starting points, not guarantees.
Size starting points
| Player | Starting range | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ages 6–9 | 29.5"–31" | The hand reaches the stalls and can close the mitt |
| Ages 10–12 | 31"–32.5" | The mitt stays controlled through receiving and transfer |
| High school | 32.5"–34" | Pocket depth matches the catcher’s receiving preference |
| College / adult | 33"–34.5" | Fit is secure without restricting the hand |
| Fastpitch softball | 32.5"–34.5" | The pocket comfortably receives the larger ball |
Hand size, hand strength, sport and personal preference can move a player within these ranges.
The control test
Put the correct game ball in the pocket. The catcher should be able to close the mitt around it, hold it securely and reopen the mitt without the wrist opening sliding around. If the mitt controls the hand instead of the hand controlling the mitt, try a smaller or easier-closing option.
Experienced catcher note
Circumference is only one part of fit. Two mitts with the same listed size can feel different because of pocket shape, hinge placement and wrist fit. Catchers should judge the whole pattern, not only the number stamped on it.
