Youth catcher’s mitt guide
For a young catcher, control matters more than buying extra size to grow into.

Quick answer for parents
Choose the smallest mitt that gives the player enough pocket for the game ball and still lets them close it with their own hand. Need help finding the right youth catcher option? Youth starting ranges
| Age | Baseball starting range | Fastpitch starting range |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8 | 29.5"–31" | 29"–31" |
| 9–10 | 31"–32" | 32"–33" |
| 11–12 | 32"–32.5" | 33"–33.5" |
Use the range to begin the fit check. Hand size and strength matter more than a birthday alone.
What a usable fit looks like
- The player can get their hand fully into the mitt without forcing it.
- The wrist opening feels secure rather than loose and twisting on contact.
- The player can close the mitt around a ball without using the other hand.
- The mitt opens again without the player fighting its weight or stiffness.
Do not buy only for growth
Extra circumference, a loose wrist and stiff hinges can make a mitt difficult for a young hand to control. A mitt that fits now gives the player a better chance to learn receiving, transfers and blocking with repeatable mechanics.
