Catcher fit

How age and hand size affect catcher’s mitt fit

Age gives you a starting range; the catcher’s actual hand control determines whether the mitt fits.

Quick answer

Use age to narrow the size range, then use hand size, hand strength and wrist security to make the decision. Two players the same age may need different fits.

What age can tell you

Age helps identify a reasonable circumference range and the level of ball the player is likely receiving. It cannot tell you whether their fingers reach the stalls, whether the wrist opening is secure or whether they can close the mitt.

What to check on the hand

  • The hand seats fully inside the mitt without stretching to reach the finger stalls.
  • The wrist stays secure when the catcher presents and receives.
  • The catcher can close the mitt around the game ball with one hand.
  • The catcher can reopen and reposition the mitt without using the throwing hand.

Growing players

Do not solve future growth by choosing a mitt the player cannot control now. Start with present fit, then move within the recommended range only when the catcher can still close and direct the mitt cleanly.
