How to compare premium baseball gloves before you buy

A checklist for comparing premium baseball and softball gloves: leather, pattern, pocket, fit, web, construction, customization, break-in, service and price.

Don’t just compare logos. Compare the glove.

Well-known premium lines are useful benchmarks for what separates a premium glove from entry-level equipment. But the right glove for a player comes from the details below, not from a name.

The checklist

  • Leather — kip, steerhide or another leather, and what the maker actually lists.
  • Pattern — built for the player’s main position.
  • Pocket — depth that matches the position and the ball.
  • Fit — closes one-handed; secure, comfortable wrist.
  • Web — closed or open, chosen for position and preference.
  • Construction — lacing, lining, padding and welting.
  • Customization — how much of the finished glove you control.
  • Break-in — how much work it needs and who can help.
  • Service — can you talk to a real person before and after you buy?
  • Price — compared against everything above, not on its own.

Bring it back to the player

Choose the position. Choose the web. Choose the colors and details. Build the glove around the player who is actually going to wear it.
