Choosing a shortstop glove

Shortstop is about range and a clean exchange. That means a shorter pattern, a shallow pocket and an open web that dumps dirt.

The short version

  • Size: 11.5" – 11.75" for baseball, 11.5" – 12" for fastpitch softball.
  • Web: I-web or single post — open, light, dirt falls straight through.
  • Pocket: shallow. You want the ball sitting high so your hand finds it fast.
  • Break-in: a shortstop glove should be game-ready and stay stiff enough to hold shape.

Why shorter wins at short

Almost every play at shortstop is a race. A longer glove holds the ball deeper, which adds a beat to the transfer and turns a bang-bang out into a safe. The extra half inch of reach never pays for the time it costs.

Leather and weight

Middle infielders usually prefer a lighter, tighter-grained leather like kip — it breaks in faster and stays quick through the exchange. Heavier steerhide lasts longer but can feel slow at the position.

If you also play second or third

Play mostly short and some second? Stay at 11.5". Play mostly short and some third? Go 11.75" and consider a dual-post web for a bit more pocket on hard-hit balls.
