Choosing an outfield glove

Outfield is length, depth and forgiveness. You're catching on the run, over your shoulder, and in the sun — the glove has to hold what it gets.

The short version

  • Size: 12.5" – 13" for baseball, 12.5" – 13.5" for fastpitch softball.
  • Web: trapeze or H-web — deep, open, and stable on the run.
  • Pocket: deep. You want the ball to stay in when you reach.
  • Extra: many outfielders prefer a longer, closed wrist for support on diving plays.

Why length helps here and hurts elsewhere

The outfield is the one place where reach beats transfer speed. An extra inch is the difference between a catch and a ball off the fingertips, and you rarely need to get the ball out in under a second.

Break-in expectation

Outfield gloves want a soft, formed pocket. Plan on real catch time — hundreds of balls, not a shortcut. A glove that's stiff through the pocket will spit balls back out on the run.
